Dreadnought by April Daniels
5.0
Dreadnought is equal parts beauty and fury.
April Daniel's really hit it out of the park with her teenage hero. Danny is flawed but completely sympathetic. One moment you're angry because she excuses the misogyny of her friend until it impacts her, and tearing up with rage on her behalf the next when he turns his disgusting interest to her.
I wish I could say characters like Graywytch were cartoonish or hyperbolic, but they're not. You see people like Graywytch everyday, willing to hurt others for daring to exist. I hate her with all my heart, I can imagine writing her was tough (or maybe too simple :/).
The storyline to Dreadnought is fairly simple but Danny's world is completely real and complex. All of the characters feel alive. I do hope that Danny ends up discarding the name Dreadnought. She doesn't need to take the same name for tradition's sake. I'm also hoping she either becomes a greycape or the leader of the legion and kicks Graywytch out on her butt.
If you're going to read one YA book this year, make it this one.
