Cari Mora by Thomas Harris
2.0
Let me preface this short review with this statement...I really like the other books by Thomas Harris, well, maybe not so much Hannibal Rising, but I've read Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon numerous times and enjoyed them each time. With that said, Cari Mora is choppy and annoying. No one has motivation, it's written as a series of completely different point of views, each chapter is 5 pages or less, and then it's on to the next choppy bit. Why is the bad guy such a crazy-bad guy? Who knows? They mention his father beat him, but I don't think that covers human trafficking, selling organs, and dissolving people in high-tech lye vats with windows, to really watch the flesh melt off. You know, how you do.
The titular character doesn't have much of a story, either. We know from her thoughts that she is worried about being deported. She cares for an elderly relative, and cooks well. She grew up as a child soldier in the jungle. But, that's it.
Seriously, there's a chapter about the thoughts of a salt-water, man-eating crocodile who lives under Pablo Escobar's mansion. Weird.
