Confession: I love short stories. Confession two: I almost never read short story collections. There's something about lumping them together in a book that almost always ruins the experience for me. I believe that out there somewhere is a collection of short stories, all of which are amazing, which have been collected into a book in the perfect order.
This collection, unfortunately, while good, wasn't perfect. The quality of the stories varies widely. I was even super disciplined in forcing myself to read this book one story at a time so that feelings about one wouldn't bleed into the next. Not being a Youth and not being particularly into Love-at-First-Sight probably didn't aid in my enjoyment, or lack thereof. I will give this collection credit for being fairly diverse in genre and characterization, if not particularly diverse in how love is sparked between characters.
High points: "Oomph" by Emery Lord was my absolute favorite story in the book. It was just the right mix of adorable and uncertain, and it felt super realistic. They weren't like, feeling the strings of destiny in the moment. They were just meeting. Runner up, "The Department of Dead Love" by Nicola Yoon.
