Congratulations, by the Way: Some Thoughts on Kindness by George Saunders

4.0

“Do those things that incline you toward the big questions, and avoid the things that would reduce you and make you trivial.”

I enjoy reading commencement speeches, and fully appreciate how difficult it is to write and deliver one with any degree of originality and panache. Perhaps I was expecting too much from Saunders. This is well structured, an ideal length, traditional, and timeless; additionally, it has that thing most good speeches have: a sense that anyone could have dreamt it up, that the notion has danced through our minds, if perhaps not so eloquently.
