Silver Flame

The first chapter of this series had me rolling my eyes and ready to give up "i was born at midnight on a full moon during a storm" I MEAN COME ON! But I struggled through it and I am so glad I did!
A high fantasy masterpiece. The world building in this series was excellent. It was familiar and strange all at the same time! I loved this series. There were a few hiccups and some rushed moments that really deserved a bit more time and notice, but overall it was amazing. And even though there was a lot of blood magic in this series NO ONE EVER CUT THEIR PALM! (Unless that was specifically needed) I can't even begin to tell you how much of a pet peeve it is for me that every time anyone ever needs blood in a series they cut their palms. How? Why? The only place worse they could cut themselves is the soles of their feet! The palms have such thick skin, don't bled a hole lot AND YOU NEED TO USE YOUR HANDS so why would you injure them for just a bit of blood when you have a perfectly good arm RIGHT THERE! Okay so maybe that pisses me off more then it should but honestly it won this series a lot of points in my eyes because of it. Also casual diversity my kryptonite, so I couldn't hate this book even if I tried. The love story was a bit instaloveish and a bit forced but I could appreciate it. I don't like protagonists who spend too long complaining and wallowing about their situations because it detracts from the story but Arianna our protagonist was a little too accepting of everything that was going on. Just a tiny bit more initial resistance would have gone a long way. Some of the side characters, particularly the animals, are adorable and I have to say my absolute favourite part of this series, even better than the no-palm-cutting, is the villains!!! No one in this series was truly evil, everyone was doing what they thought was right, no one did anything purely because they were bad. They were all the heroes of their own stories even if what they were doing was wrong, they weren't BAD people. Misguided, confused, lost, desperate sure. But evil? No, I don't think so. And I love that so so much! Because it's the truth no one is purely evil, no one is the villain of their own stories and books that get that right always nail it for me.
Who I recommend this book to: anyone who loves a good fantasy world, vampires, magic, fae and complex characters with complex motivations.
I give this 5/5 roses 🌹 it wasn't perfect but it was damn good.
