I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh

5.0

Wow. This book does not go as expected. I can’t help but marvel at the fact that this story would not have worked in a visual medium - words are what bring this book alive. I listened to the audio version with two different voices and both were great. I think the dual voices supported the narrative structure.

This book is gruelling. The second half is not an easy read. I would not recommend anyone with a predisposition to be triggered to read it - the author does not hold back on the mindset of an abuser, nor does she sugarcoat the violence that comes with their actions. The picture she paints is vivid but distressing. Please be careful when reading it and make doubly sure before you recommend it to anyone.

I’ve read three books by Mackintosh and I’ve been floored by all. She has such a grasp for narrative twists - she keeps you guessing. I love that the author is rightly sympathetic towards the correct characters but also paints most of them as morally ambiguous. She makes a lot of them human.

Her background with the police adds such a dimension to her books. There are procedures in there that the average person may not even have thought of.

Can’t get enough of Mackintosh’s work. I am looking forward to reading more!
