The Great Gatsby
by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Theme or characters that resonated with me: I related most to Nick. I could picture myself as the sort of wallflower figure that Nick embodies, with the hopeful idea of a romance with Jordan on the side. I am unable to relate to the desire for status. I don't feel like Gatsby in that I would not endeavor to attract a woman with status or wealth, as I don't envision myself with someone for whom those things are important.
Emotions, thoughts, or memories it brought up in me: The most fascinating part of the book to me is the question of whether Gatsby or Daisy was driving the car that struck Myrtle. The event is described in the book to Nick by Gatsby, after the fact. I wonder if Gatsby was actually the driver, and was lying to Nick to relieve himself of the moral accountability. It is only after Nick suggests with a question that Daisy was driving that Gatsby says "Yes" after a moment.
Opinion about the author or writing style: I liked the 1920's atmosphere. I enjoyed Gatsby's use of the term Old Sport.
Favorite Passage:
"And I like large parties. They're so intimate. At small parties there isn't any privacy."
________
"In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since. "Whenever you feel like criticizing any one," he told me, "just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had."
