Mind of Winter by Laura Kasischke
3.0

This is a novel I liked a lot up to a point. Then, I just liked it okay. The main character, named Holly, and her husband oversleep on Christmas morning. He rushes off to pick up relatives at the airport, she spends the day trying to get dinner ready. But there is a massive blizzard, so no one can get there, and she is stuck at home with her beautiful daughter, named Tatiana.

Tatiana was adopted from Russian, and the plot contains many flash backs to when Holly and her husband adopted the little girl, who is now fifteen. Things are not what they seem, but it is not clear what they heck is going on.

There is some beautiful writing. As far as the plot, with everything told from the view point of Holly, the events are open to interpretation, even before the last pages, when things get a little crazy. It is pretty psychological, but in a good way. Also, the limited time frame, with a lot of back story, was like Ethan Frome.
