A nice romance but some things a missing

The story is about Skylar who works as a marketing creative. She meets Lo for the first to do a work interview and they have instant chemistry. The story is about Skylar being with a women for the first time and how she navigates that in her personal and professional life. This is a sapphic romance with two Black women and I really appreciate that. I want more romance that explores relationships beyond cishet couples, so I was really interesting in this novel. The romance is nice but I do think the novel was lacking in some areas.

The book is kind of short (130 pages) so the pacing moves very quickly and I think some important character development falls short because of it. Much of the book was spent telling and not showing the events that take place and that’s kind of a pet peeve of mine. I wish Skylar’s relationship with her parents was explored for fully and I wish we got more in-depth conversations. Another subplot was Skylar’s careering that was told to us in a really rushed way. The ending also moved too quickly for. It was left with a lot of questions and things didn’t really resolve in a satisfying way. I also with there were more sexy scenes. This book have really benefited from bung longer so that we could explore these things more fully. This is my general issue with novellas, they’re too short to get complete development.

This a nice novel and if you’re looking for a light read to read in between books I’d recommend it. I just wouldn’t go in with high expectations.
