The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

tw for the book: rape

honestly, i'm very conflicted about this book. it made me extremely uncomfortable and almost physically sick (to be fair i have a cold but let's ignore that for a second), but i enjoyed it. like, it was the good and fun kind of uncomfortable because i signed up for it (?) and i guess i'm starting to understand why people enjoy horror movies so much lol.

*also, i have to say, i basically read this whole thing in one day. i started it like a month ago and just read the first 20 pages but left it there for weeks cause i wasn't feeling like reading. i may change my mind about my review/rating after letting it marinate in my brain for a few days lol but we'll see.

anyway, i read some other reviews about people criticizing it, but how the white characters acted in the book made a lot of sense to me. ignoring the black children getting murdered for the sake of their reputations and only caring when it came to their own children seemed very realistic, and to me, it seemed like the author was criticizing it (both through how the whole situation is portrayed and through mrs. greene's character). basically all the characters suck (except mrs. greene), but i feel that the author made this clear through the constant criticisms of these characters' actions.

overall it was an exciting read - i don't usually read horror (the only horror book i've read before was pet semetary and it was ok) but i actually really liked this one!
