The Pied Piper of Hamelin by Robert Browning

3.0

“You threaten us, fellow? Do your worst, Blow your pipe there till you burst!"

A general rule to follow is to pay someone for a service they provide for you that you are unable or unwilling to provide for yourself. Another general rule is that if you refuse to pay someone for their service, don’t ask them to do their worst, because they can and they more than likely will. This is a great cautionary tale that is a lot more disturbing and darker than any memory I have of it from when I was a child. I love the dread that comes through the page as the parents can do nothing but stand in place like a block of wood and watch as the children of the town follow the Pied Piper out of the town, and are never seen again. There’s the air of horror in this fairytale that makes the story stick with you after reading and I can remember an animation of the story that accompanies this feeling perfectly. The writing itself gets a tad taxing with the rhyming schemes and allusions, but overall a very quick and fun read that creeped me out more than I had expected. The amazing animations in this version of the story really add to the experience and the atmosphere of the whole story.
