Oh. A very good book. I love Court intrigue in a fantasy or sci fi setting, and especially so when it follows a character who is suddenly thrust into the court setting in a position of power. This story has lots of different threads which all overlap and interlink. But the main thread throughout is the inherent kindness of the main character. Maia endeavours to be honest and kind in all his actions, more so than his role tends to allow. He sometimes struggles to be kind which makes him an even better character. He endeavours. He strives. He reaches. It is the core of his being and I love him for it. The idea of kindness being the main connection between people is at the core of this story.
