This book was definitely a love note to Phantom of the Opera. Clearly inspired, but I love that it did its own thing especially with the magic system. Loved the storyline, the romance made total sense, and the ending was heart wrenching but was not out of left field. I agree with what the author said on her website about the ending: in the style of Phantom of the Opera, a sequel would cheapen the ending.

The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is because the beginning (first 2 chapters) was weird for me. It seemed like it was trying too hard to liken Isda to OG Phantom, and I almost didn’t continue. But once I got past that, I was so glad I did because I loved the story.

Isda is flawed and I love that for her. Emeric is kinda annoying in the beginning of their friendship but it makes sense with his characterization. His lightness to her darkness.

Give this a read!! (ESPECIALLY if you loved Phantom)
