Butcher & Blackbird by Brynne Weaver
3.0
This book was way more fun than I expected!

First of all, I read this while listening along to the audio book and WOW. The voice actors are SO FUN! It definitely made this an entirely different experience in the best way!
I love how the book follows almost strictly their relationship. There are very few scenes where they are not with each other, thinking about each other, or communicating. Even with time jumps between months and sometimes a year, it didn't feel as if anything was missing.
Their chemistry was palpable throughout the entire book, and I loved the tension that was created in the slow burn.
While I didn't exactly LOVE the whole accidental cannibalism scene due to the gore, it was also probably the most memorable. I laughed, I for sure cringed, and I felt a lot of sympathy for poor drugged Rowan who admitted all his feelings about Sloane.
For the first 75% of the book I was totally convinced that it was a 4 star read (minus one simply because the gore is just not my thing). However, the last 25% made me knock it down one more. The third act break up felt so unreasonable and unneeded. Rowan and Sloane did so much work to get where they were and that's it? The best part of that section was that lobotomy Dave wasn't actually a vegetable. It was a fun little twist but the turmoil it caused between Rowan and Sloane was just not fun.
Also, while I can infer what happened to Sloane and Lark in their past, I am curious and wish there was a reveal there. I'm hoping that maybe it will be in Larks book, but we shall see!
Overall, this was a fun book! It isn't something that I typically would have picked up, so I'm glad is was my book club's pick for February!
