Between the Lines by Jodi Picoult, Samantha van Leer

2.0

The book was weird to read, at first. I've read Picoult's works before and the big thing that attracted me to her was her criticism of social injustices, the ones our conscience sort of ignores unless it's directly confronted by it, only to end with a heartbreaking twist at the end but...this wasn't like that. This doesn't fit that genre at all. The style is very different (and not just because of the interchanging colors...but it is a collaboration so I will be kind...)

First of all, it has a happy ending! And it's not easy. I mean, Delilah is a girl who falls in love with a character in her fairy tale book (after she finds out that he can talk to her) and tries to get him out. I thought it'd be an easy thing, like, 'make a wish and we'll have a happy ever after' kind of thing, but it was actually really hard to get him out of there. And, the twist at the end, was really good. There are many ways this story could've failed and, surprisingly, I finish it feeling quite satisfied.

Personally, I didn't enjoy it until a good 2/3 of the book, but that's, I think, because I was in shock in the change of style and it took me a while to come around. I love the ending, I love what it says about 'Once upon a time...', how it's not really, cuz the story starts again every time it's opened. Overall, not bad. I definitely imagined it going worse. I'm glad to be wrong (but it's still not what I usually get when I read a book of hers).
