Wolves of the Calla by Stephen King

4.0

When I first read Wolves of the Calla it was probably my favorite in the Dark Tower Series. I mean, Seven Samurai set in the DT universe? I’m in! With a second reading, though, it’s lost some luster. Mainly what bugs me is the change in King’s writing. I know a lot happened to King between Wizard and Glass and Wolves, so it’s understandable, still there are some minor quirks he has picked up somewhere that bug me.

Overall, the world building is great as usual. I love how as the series progresses we are exposed slowly to the universe. I know part of this is because King was figuring it out as he went, but it works. Callahan’s story bogs down what could’ve been a relatively tight narrative—truthfully it could have been a completely separate novel, which is my other major complaint.

Still, I love Wolves, just not as much as I used to. Also need to give a special shout out to my boy Andy the Messenger Robot—my favorite new character from this entry.
