The Secret Life of Cows
by Rosamund Young
A delightful insight into the lives of cows! The perfect length book for the subject, who needs to know that much about cows really you know? Easily read in one afternoon.
Cows (along with other farm animals) are up to much more than we think. They live seemingly full lives and are as diverse as people. Some people could argue that this whole book is just a farmer anthropomorphising animals but I don't think that's true. Humans deciding that we are the only animals that can have connections and feelings is just another example of our egotistical and conceited demeanour. One could argue we are not humanising an animal but mammal-ising a mammal (to quote Harari) which I wager is fair enough. It's been proven time and time again that animals have more complex social structures than we give them credit for yet we still consider that as humanising an animal, preposterous!
A great Christmas read over a nut roast! Or if one is feeling particular macabre a great Christmas read over a delectable steak! (soz the smug vegetarian in me couldn't resist, JK though OBVS NOT JUDGING BLAH BLAH I still enjoy a cheese board every now and again CALM DOWN people are so sensitive)
