A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske
3.0

A cute but average book. I would say neither the plot nor the setting was something compleeeeatley new...but it wasn't bad or anything.
I suppose it was a bit limited...? Like they set up this whole interesting secret world of mages and in the end we only visited like 2 places... and spent a lot of time just...playing around, dining and researching at one of those. And foir all the research, we only got the barest hint of the magic system and even less of an...alternative...(no spoilers^^) within that system. I would have honestly liked to have explored that more....It'll probably happen in the second one but honestly I would have like more in this book to hook me. As it is it's kinda meh for me.

The relationship between the main characters was cute but again...It was just (and I don't mean it in a bad way) vanilla...like there is the barest hint of angstyness but apart from that they seem pretty compatible. In fact - it made me wish they'd have just gotten together faster so we could have seen them in full couple mode in this book. The whole "misunderstanding leading to a brief breakup at the end" trope is really not my favorite and it really could have been just dropped in this book - it would not have been missed.

So yeah, it was a fine book I'd recommend it if you're interested just from the synopsis. Just don't expect anything too amazing^^
