‘The bread the devil knead’ by Lisa Allen-Agostini

Book review (TW - This review/book contains reference to domestic abuse/violence/incest/sexual abuse)

This book centres around Alethea Lopez, an independent Trinidadian woman who manages a boutique in Port of Spain.

As the book unravels, we find out that Alethea is in an abusive relationship with her partner Leo. Leo treats Alethea like an object, disrespecting her and belittling her intelligence. Their relationship is similar to the one Alethea’s mother, Marcia, had with her father when she was growing up.

Despite her friends and various people that she encounters questioning the marks on her body, Alethea insists that she is not being subjected to domestic abuse/violence in her relationship with Leo.

The book at times was very hard to read. We learn that Alethea was consistently treated very badly by both her parents, which manifests later in Alethea’s adulthood as she is portrayed as very self deprecating, private person.

Without giving too much away, this book provides an eye opening insight into perceptions and social stigmas towards single women.

Lisa Allen-Agostini writes a beautiful novel , constantly switching from the present to the past.

Very much recommend this book.
