Red Sister by Mark Lawrence

3.0

Generally kind of fun. The writing takes some pretty drastic dips into painfully purple bullshit whenever Lawrence is trying to get deep or paint a dramatic scene. Nona is certainly a hardened kid, but she doesn't think or act like one at all. A lot of the dialog between her and her friends reads as grizzled veterans, not as traumatized children. But it's still fairly enjoyable. I hope Lawrence got a stronger editor for the second one.
