20+ years ago, when I read this book as a tween, I felt this was an allegory of adulthood: being forced to abandon childhood for an interminable task that grinds you up, with arbitrary rules. The only redeeming factor the loves you meet on the journey.
Now, this reads to me as an indictment of capitalism: you are forced on a path, given insufficient aid, and punished when you inevitably fall short. The winner doesn’t really win at all, simply outlasts the rest in a rigged game.
