Beneath the Surface by Emily McIntire
4.0
The last book of the Sugarlake series and one of Emily’s first into the dark romance genre. This book is darker than the pervious three in the series for the storyline, but beautifully written. The FMC struggles with self worth and abandonment due to childhood trauma that the MMC sees and doesn’t ball from. And the MMC struggles with family appearances that shaped his behavior as a child to internal conflict as an adult that the FMC learns to appreciate. These two characters have an unconventional love story that fits perfectly for them.
An additional note is that this book concludes the Sugarlake series where each book is a standalone with a running plot for the whole series. An excellent series in my eyes.
