Just Kids by Patti Smith

5.0

I picked up this book because I'm a Patti Smith fan, but I read it in five days because it's beautifully written. I was surprised at how filled with love the memoir of her time with Robert Mapplethorpe is--she had to find out he was gay eventually (sorry if I ruined it for you, his work was famously singled out by Senator Jesse Helms) but the writing was suffused with affection and gratitude, not any bitterness or betrayal, which I would think would be also a valid response. Also, she makes the 70s seem unbelievably cool.
