I don't know if it's just that I read it in short pieces, but I found the narrative hard to follow with all of the flashbacks. That said, I did read the last 100+ pages in one go. There's a huge twist at the end. There's definitely some sexual innuendos, which might just go over younger teens' heads, but that plus the violence and complicated narrative is probably why SLJ recommends it to 9th & up. I think it's appropriate for 7th & up, but will probably only appeal to hardcore sci fi readers.
