I enjoyed Under Fortunate Stars. The audiobook was excellent, with two great voice actors. I loved the plot and the characters. I even liked the flashback chapters, although it was sometimes difficult to step back from the main story.
While Under Fortunate Stars is a good sci-fi novel featuring space wars, first contact, and time travel, the story was really about history, storytelling, and communication. The relationships depicted were realistic, despite the limited space given to fully develop each character and their connections. Unfortunately, I strongly disliked one character, so much so that I skipped most of their scenes. This story had high stakes already and didn't need a villain, especially one that embodied so many stereotypes and tropes.
