A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

Perfection. Amazing. Glorious. Superb. I can just keep on going. This book exceeded my hopes and dreams. So be prepared for the spoilers that are about to be thrown about in this review.
This has been my most anticipated release... for about a month. I held back on picking up ACOTAR for about a year and then just last month, I decided it was about that time to finally get on with it-- and I never want to go back to that place where ACOTAR isn't a part of my life. I must say though, part of me regrets picking this series up now because of the torturous year that I have to endure until the next installment is released. But a much bigger part of me is glad that I have known this story and these characters much sooner than if I waited.
Okay, let's see if I am able to come up with any coherent thoughts and comments considering I just finished it 20 minutes ago.
We have to start with Rhysand. I knew Rhys was the one since the first book, I spent a good 75% of ACOTAR shipping Tamlin and Feyre, and then here comes Rhys swooping in from left field stealing hearts and shit. I was beyond excited for this book particularly because I knew we would get to delve more into Rhys's life and see why he is the way that he is (which is perfect). Also, we get to see the Night Court! I absolutely love Velaris, the city of starlight. Before I even began reading ACOTAR I took a look at the map and found that my favorite courts would either be the Night Court because I believed it to be full of the night sky lit with breathtaking stars and just endless beauty that can be found in the dark, or the Spring Court because it is actually my favorite season (shoutout to my body for not having allergies). And if that's not a sign, I don't know what is. Rhysand was such a full character; he made others think him a monster, all so he can save the city and the people that he loves. Not caring what it means for him, as long as they are safe and happy, and it really shows when we see his relationship developing with Feyre. Unlike Tamlin, he knew Feyre was capable of making her own decisions on what was best for her and had given her free rein to do so, no matter what it meant for him in the end. He would have let her go running back into Tamlin's arms if she asked to go back, no matter how it would hurt him, he would have never pushed her into something that she didn't want to do.
I’m not going to lie; this love triangle had me thinking a lot about the love triangle form the Shatter Me series. Where Feyre is a Juliette, utterly broken inside, falling in love with the first guy to show her kindness. Tamlin, much like Adam, is the ultimate protector and will go to the ends of the earth to keep her safe. And Rhysand is portrayed as the villain who turns out to have had her best interests in mind and was the one who ultimately believed she was strong and can hold her own and allowed her the means to do so, like my beloved Warner. But ACOMAF is much more developed and the characters are so much more complex, and is really just a step up (although I still absolutely love the Shatter Me trilogy). In the SM series, Juliette’s character development spans over three books, and was my favorite character development in any story… up until this one. Feyre flourishes so much in just this one book and I just know she will go beyond in the next because that’s just how amazing she is.
I have to admit, I didn’t really have any attachment to her in ACOTAR, and I didn’t care for her too much, not nearly as much as I do now. I think she is so badass for being able to leave such an unhealthy relationship and want to heal and grow for herself, not just because some guy told her to. Especially when said relationship was really the only real love that she had experienced so far in her life. She was able to admit just how harmful it was for her early on, instead of her denying it and that shows amazing character in and of itself.
Back to the Spring Court though, I don’t want to believe that Tamlin is really so horrible. I know he is good and has good intentions, but he is so blind by love that his good intentions are harming everyone else in the process. I can only hope that in the next book that he can open his eyes and accept what happened and begin to move on. And as for Lucien, he was pretty questionable in this book, but I can’t find it in my heart to hate him, be disappointed yes, but turning my back on him? I just can’t. Because he is so incredibly loyal, it leads him to make some problematic choices, but I know in the end he will make the right choice. Okay, but can we talk about the bond between him and Elain, I just knew that they were going to be a thing since ACOTAR, I felt it in my soul. I just want to actually see them together now-- especially with Elain dealing with her new immorality, I want to see how they work as a couple. I'm glad Sarah J Maas didn't just disregard Feyre's family as if they never happened, I like that she is including them in the story because they are a huge part of who Feyre is and why.
Speaking of Feyre's family, how about we discuss our new Court of Dreams family. From the moment I met Cassian I knew he would be perfect for Nesta-- and then when they actually came together in person, I just felt that ship stirring in my heart. I can honestly read a whole spin off series about these two, even though we haven't read that much about them... yet. Mor is exactly the sister that Feyre never had and pretty much everything she needs, she's loving and protecting and believes in Feyre, she doesn't disregard her. Amren is like the scary older sister that won't allow any one to torment her family except for her and is fiercely protective, but will deny to anyone that she actually has feelings. Azriel is like the mysterious, brooding cousin who freaks you out a little but you know he has the kindest soul and is also fiercely protective of the ones that he loves. I think it's safe to say I just love all of the characters (even some of the ones that I am upset with at the moment)
BUT WAIT, there's more! We finally, finally get to see the King of Hybern. If only at the end, but it was a long time coming, and you just know that the next book is going to be hella intense because he has some stuff up his sleeves. I really want to know more about Hybern and why they still have this treacherous king ruling over them. I also want to know more about the king's history (and also his name). And Jurian is back now which is all types of exciting. Maybe we will get to see this Miryam and Drakon we keep hearing about, I think that would be very interesting. And now that we know people can be brought back from the dead, I just want to state my theory that I don't believe that Amarantha is really gone. I think she will be back and I just hope it doesn't break Feyre more than before.
This is the longest review I have ever written, and this is only scraping the surface, I still have so much more on my mind that I want to talk about. But this has to be all for now. I clearly don't know what I am to do with my life now, I was planning on picking up The Crown after this, but I might need a few days to get over this book hangover. Lord help me.
