Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898 by Edwin G. Burrows, Mike Wallace

4.0

It took me 10 years to finish this book.
It was fascinating, but at times I found it truly depressing to see how little we have learned from our history. We have been dealing with the same problems (economic, social, infrastructure, etc) for hundreds of years. I hadn’t really thought about “modern day” problems being really just human problems. At times it was overwhelming how frustrated I was with everyone - the people in the past and the people today who can simply read a little history to see how their “solutions” “worked” in the past. So I would put the book aside for a while.
Anyway, I am done now and am glad to have read it. And I look forward to reading the next volume - however long it takes.
