Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood
4.0

Isherwood is a DELIGHT to read. Everything from his writing style to the actual characters and stories he describes is just a pure joy to read. Right up my alley. It deals with grave topics, of course, being set in Berlin just before the second World War, so don't let my choice of words fool you. It can be serious and raw at times, but the way Isherwood narrates it makes it such a wonderful reading experience. It's as he says: he's a cameraman. Most things happen around him, occasionally including him in the course of action, but it's mostly based around other characters being presented to us.

Christopher Isherwood is one of those writers that make me want to use everything I see around me, every person I meet, every event I attend, as inspiration for my writing. He makes me appreciate the art of living, even if what he writes about is quite horrible at times. After being rather disappointed by A Single Man and liking but not adoring Mr Norris Changes Trains, I'm incredibly pleased to have enjoyed one of his books this much. 4.5/5 stars. I need to read more asap.
