If I had read this as a teenager I don't think I would have been able to appreciate it. The ending has a really powerful message. Our main character didn't need to be saved by anyone by herself, but the sisterhood she has with other young women is so revolutionary to me. Sure, we can believe she would have tried to get better on her own, but her friendships from the hospital are part of what pulls her from that darkness. This book gave me the language to understand and describe how I felt about the things I experienced as a teenage girl. I never knew how to describe what I had going on inside, even now as an adult, but this put it together for me.
