Heart Berries by Terese Marie Mailhot
4.0

Goodreads Choice Award Nominee for Memoir & Autobiography 2018

“The way being healed is never real unless every moment of every day you remind yourself of your progress and remind yourself not to go back, or hurt someone, or do the wrong thing - it's not healing unless you keep moving - you're never done.”― Terese Marie Mailhot, Heart Berries

Very close to a 4 star review. This was heartbreaking and empowering. Terese Marie Mailhot grew up on the Seabird Island Indian Reservation in the Pacific Northwest. She survived a horrible childhood and was eventually hospitalized and diagnosed with PTSD, bipolar II disorder, and an eating disorder. Her memoir is a written account of her trauma and it is a memorial for her mother. It also recounts her reunion with her father who was then murdered.

Mailhot finds her voice in trauma. Her mental state is clearly revealed in her writings. Heart Berries is graphic and full of pain, sorrow, hate, and bravery over her abuse and what happened within her family as well as with her mental illness and her relationships. Through her writing, it is clear that Mailhot has found her voice and control over her own story.

There is a rhythm to her writing that beats like a drum. Once you've found that rhythm, it is very hard to put this book down.
