The Sword and the Shield: The Revolutionary Lives of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. by Peniel E. Joseph

I started reading about the civil rights movement from the perspective of Malcolm X, so I had my misgivings about MLK (mostly because of how he is portrayed in the media). This book cleared a lot of that up.
It details the complexities in the relationship of these two leaders; often pitted against each other, they shaped their identities in contrast to each other. And maybe they - and America at that point in history - needed that.
It does make you wonder what would have become of them had they lived past 39.
