Wow, this was... so disappointing. I'm not sure I've ever disliked a classic as much as I've disliked this book. Heathcliff made the book unbearable, much like he made the lives of everyone around him unbearable. The ultimate incel - if Catherine didn't choose him, then by God, everyone would pay. I struggled through it for the mere satisfaction of having completed another classic, but it was quite the struggle.
Was it a love story? No, absolutely not, until perhaps the last chapter withCathy and Hareton . Was it a revenge story? Eh, kind of, but The Count of Monte Cristo does it so much better. Heathcliff's motivation for revenge was not as satisfactory, nor as clear cut, and I was on the complete opposite side of the revenge-seeker the entire time, screaming 'REALLY?! Does this REALLY seem like a proportional response?!'. Maybe it was a moral warning? But then why has Heathcliff been interpreted as a romantic figure for so long. If it was meant to be a moral warning, then it was a spectacular failure of one.
Glad to finish this book merely so I can never think about it again. What a disappointment.
