Silas Marner by George Eliot
4.0

This is the only book that has ever made me, contentedly child-less woman that I am, want a child.

Jokes aside, the crux of this book is the story of Marner's depression. That was beautifully and empathetically written. Part 2 was essentially just an over-long epilogue.

"Do we not wile away moments of inanity or fatigued waiting by repeating some trivial movement or sound, until the repetition has bred a want, which is incipient habit? This will help us understand how the love of accumulating money grows an absorbing passion in men whose imaginations, even in the beginning of their hoard, showed them no purpose beyond it."
