Body at Buccaneer's Bay by Josh Lanyon
4.0

This was a bit of roller-coaster as far as these books go. It started strong (honestly, my favorite first chapter so far) and I think the mystery was strong enough that it held my interest all throughout the book, but somewhere in the middle I was so frustrated I thought it would be my first low rated book in the series. However, the ending was good enough that when I finished, I was feeling quite happy about it.

Alright, I'm going to come out and say it: I don't like Nora. She was amusing as far as the first book, but has become increasingly frustrating and annoying in the following books. Her inability to respect Ellery's limits and the way she pressures him into things he's not comfortable with is not cute, and in this book it was actually absurd. I was uncomfortable by her antagonizing of Kingston, and though I get where that might be going,
Spoilerhaving her be regretful he couldn't have been the murderer was a bit much.

A big thing in this book was my frustration with Ellery's envolvement in the whole thing, and I found myself on Jack's side for nearly all the conflicts. It just seems absurd to me that he keeps letting himself get pressured into these things, and with how things keeps getting worse each book, I certainly hope he's not going to be doing the same shit the next book.

The reason I found the ending so compelling, however,
Spoiler is that I really like how the author writes Jack and Ellery's conflicts. I love reading healthy relationships that communicate, even when they run into trouble. There's a balance with including angst in relationships, where you can't make people fight more than they seem to care about each other, or demonstrate so -- in that case, it becomes hard to believe the relationship makes sense. That's not a problem in these books, as in every step of the way I'm reassured of how much they like each other, and how much they want this to work and are willing to work on it.

And as far as the whole letter mystery goes... I think I have a pretty compelling candidate. We'll see how that unfolds.
