A Drop of Venom by Sajni Patel
4.0
adventurous dark sad tense medium-paced

Manisha is from a persecuted group of people, the Nagin. She's sent away to the floating mountains for protection as a priestess, but that is temporary, as she is not fully accepted. A horrible event casts her from the mountain and turns her into something else.

Pratyush is a warrior, the slayer, potentially the last of his kind. As he kills monsters, they go to live inside his head. The king keeps him trapped through his family and loved ones, but he is drawn to this mysterious woman inside the temple, who isn't like any of the other priestesses.

This is a retelling of the Medusa myth, using Indian folklore to ground the story. There's war, and pain, and hope, and it's done all quite well. A lot to chew on, especially in reflecting how it might be like today's times.
