The Appeal by Janice Hallett
3.0

Martin and Helen Hayward run The Grange Health Club in the small town of Lockwood, and are key figures in amateur theatre group The Fairway Players. Whilst rehearsing for their next production the Haywards share the devastating news with the group that their Grandaughter Poppy is seriously ill with cancer, and needs treatment from the USA, which is very expensive. Members generously resolve to help with fundraising to enable this to happen, but when a shocking secret is revealed about the poorly girl's family, a murder occurs, and law students Olufemi 'Femi' Hassan and Charlotte Halroyd are charged by solicitor Roderick Tanner QC to invest a possible case of wrongful conviction...

The Appeal is told in the form of various methods of correspondence including emails, WhatsApp messages and police reports. The reader is drip-fed this info along with the two students. The plot twists and turns nicely. The characters are interesting, although few are really that likeable! I guessed the 'why' but not the 'who' or 'how'. It did feel a bit repetitive at times, but it was an interesting premise and, due the way it was written, it meant I kept on wanting to read the next bit! Overall I enjoyed it, although the end felt a little rushed. I liked the epistolary nature of the book and it will be interesting to see where this author goes next.
