Awakening
by Sharon Bolton
dark
mysterious
medium-paced
This is a narrative that makes me think I liked the story and was annoyed by the plot. By story, I mean I liked the characters (when Clara wasn't being blind or obtuse), I loved the atmosphere and place, and the language was pleasant and often evocative. The bricks of the plot were...torridly Gothic and definitely gave me the sense of watching horror-movie characters make stupid choices, repeatedly. I definitely thought "YOU IN DANGER GIRL" more than twice. Also you can't introduced the red-headed girlfriend and leave readers hanging...I've noticed Bolton likes to leave her romance threads loose and free.
