The Door
by Magda Szabó
This was a really tough book that will stay with me for a while. It seemed short but I read it really slowly because it was, for me, emotionally difficult to read a lot at a time - the characters struggle to empathize with someone whose behavior makes *no sense* to them and occasionally obsess over it. It made me wish I had more background about Hungary because a lot of the dynamic gave me bits and pieces that suggested I'd understand even more about the world of Hungary in the mid-to-late 20th century. Maybe at some point I'll learn more about it and return to the book with fresh eyes! For now, though, I see that many people have a lot to say about this book in like the New Yorker so I bet I'll learn even more exciting background soon!
