In this world there are 3 castes. The highest caste is mostly animal form with a few human characteristics and the lowest caste is all human. The main character is a human taken from her father and small village to become one of the evil king’s concubines for a year. She has to learn the graces of the court as well as endure the brutality of the king. I liked the slow burn forbidden sapphic romance and the the cultural references that the author tucked into the fantasy world. This book still didn’t draw me fully into the story. I felt like an observer at all times.
