Dark Magic by Christine Feehan

3.0

Back in the day, in the era of Twilight, after hunting down new vampire romance books. The Dark series became a rival for Twilight. After buying several books in this series, I've decided to try and reread the Dark series. Starting with Dark Magic, the story is so strikingly similar to Twilight. Our young-ish protagonist Savannah's centuries older life mate Gregori comes to "claim" her.

My first thoughts on this book were five stars, no notes, but after rereading it…I realized that it's not the best thing ever. One thing about Savannah that I liked is her voice of reason. She knows that her young age paired with a century-old man isn't ideal, and he holds tremendous power. This power frightens her especially hearing the stories of Gregori and his fighting for his people. However, halfway through the book, Savannah starts to deviate from her early worries of being paired with a powerful male.

Dark Magic is a very dull book since most of it is about Gregori, who is continuously running into people mistaking the Carpathians as vampires. There isn't much focus on the relationship between Gregori and Savannah. Instead, due to their mind-reading, Savannah reads Gregori's mind and forgives him for his shortcomings as a significant other. Of course, the possessiveness of Gregori and most Carpathians with their mates is due to females' low birth. Even as Savannah tries to show a small ounce of independence or help Gregori, she is shut down or ridiculed for putting herself in danger. There are moments, later in the book, that Gregori decides to work on his possessiveness.

This book mostly focuses on an old man continually getting into dangerous situations and complains once his younger wife tries helping him.
