magical dragons can never go wrong!

╭⋆ short summary: ⋆╯
being trained all her life to become a scribe, violet sorrengail's life turned upside down when her mother, lilith, a high-ranking general, told her that she needs to be a rider just like her, mira (violet's sister), and brennan (violet's older brother) of course, she didn't like the idea of it, not a single bit. her love for books and her intelligence was meant for being a scribe—not a rider. but lilith is a force to be reckon with, violet has no say in regards to what her mother wants; even if that meant turning her back on something she loved the most. now, she's faced to become a dragon rider, pass some deadly tests in order to move forward and prove she's worthy. all while trying to resist her undeniable attraction towards her enemy, xaden riorson; a son of a traitor who wanted violet dead because she's the daughter of the person responsible for his father's death. will she able to survive from xaden, or from the threats of other students... or will she prove that she's really unfit to become a rider and just die before she can bond with a dragon?

╭⋆ scattered thoughts: ⋆╯>
literally one of the best books i read this 2023! i'm just really glad that i gave into the hype! reading this as a huge fantasy lover was such a rollercoaster ride. one moment i'm giggling and fascinated, the next second i'm rolling my eyes to the heavens for the umpteenth time and fighting the urge to throw my ipad across the wall. if i get a dollar every freaking time i had rolled my eyes over one specific character, i'd be rich lmao

the world building was amazing!!! this is why i love fantasy books, i read it for the world building and the other factors (e.g. plot, sub-plot, romance, tropes etc..) are just a cherry on top! being lost in a world far different from reality is the exact escapism that i needed in my life. aside from that, the magic system was fascinating! i love the whole idea behind manifesting a signet when you bond with your dragon. it doesn't happen instantly though, which makes it more exciting and thrilling not knowing when they'll acquire it. in this book, signets are special abilities or unique powers that riders possess. once acquired, they can use it to fight or wield protection for themselves and to others. this type of fantasy element have always been my favorite!!! my love for the different kinds of dragons have deepened due to this book. the mere descriptions, types, and lore behind it was so fun to read! their bond with their humans riders were really wholesome. also love the fact that dragons loathe discrimination and wouldn't think twice to burn a rude and arrogant human especially if they deem them unworthy of riding a dragon. stakes are most definitely high in this book! no, they don't get expelled if they're unfit for the role. characters actually die for the sake of proving they're fit to become a dragon rider!!! THEY DIE!!! SOME. LIKEABLE. CHARACTERS. DIE. AND. MOST. ARE. DESERVED. sorry, not sorry.

plotwise, it's not like it was never done before. enemies to lovers, underdog fmc, intimidating morally grey mmc, unbearable mother, supportive sister, fmc & mmc's life intertwined because of their parent's pasts... and many more. nonetheless, i mostly fell in love with the book being easy read & fast paced, the world building, the anticipation of knowing what happens next, and the magical realism aspect that made it top-notch!!

this was initially a 5 star read for me since i devoured the first half of the book like a piece of cake, but then i had a hard time because of dain. ngl, he's an annoying piece of shit even though i understand where he was coming from. every time his name pops out and he has a scene with the fmc (even a whole ass chapter with violet) I WAS LITERALLY FIGHTING THE URGE TO SKIP READING THEIR SCENES TOGETHER... that's how much i despise his character !!!

╭⋆ here's a individual review of the main characters: ⋆╯
↪ violet sorrengail had proven to everyone that she isn't the weak and fragile woman that others deemed her to be. despite coming from a household name, she wasn't fit to be a dragon rider unlike her mother, sister and brother. however, she was determined to pass and one day, be able to bond with a dragon despite the numerous discouragements and threats from others. her character development was truly inspirational. i love that she never gave up—no matter what cost and no matter how much blood she'll shed. violet will fight for what she wants, and she's so slay for that. i love independent women <333
*:・゚✧ “i will not die today.”

↪ xaden riorson carries a huge responsibility on his shoulder for being a son of a traitor. he's the type of man your mother and sister would tell you to avoid; quite literally (violet's sister, mira, warned her about him) despite the rather intimidating and cold demeaner that he exudes, xaden is a loyal, caring, wise leader, and exceptional rider. even though he didn't say it at first, it was clear that he's one of the few people that actually believed in violet. not only that, he trained and helped her to become better even though there were banters and tensions during the said trainings. never did she told violet that she should just go back and read books for the rest of her life unlike dain. this man was supportive and actually useful to violet. he was also the pillar of the 107 marked ones and carried all the burdens as their leader. this man can do no wrong and we forgive him for what he did to violet.
*:・゚✧ “there's nowhere in existence you could go that i wouldn't find you, violence.”
*:・゚✧ “she could use a little less protection and a little more instruction.”
*:・゚✧ “stop. fucking. coddling. her....she is not a child. she's a full-grown woman. a rider. start treating her like one and at least have the decency to give her the truth.”

↪ dain aetos is violet's childhood friend back in the early days. the moment he found out that violet will become a rider, dain was intensely against it. being the protective friend that he is, dain was doing everything he can so that violet won't end up being a rider. you would think the his opposition would stop the moment violet bonds with a dragon, hell no. this man would come up to violet rubbing in her face that she still shouldn't be a rider. ON MULTIPLE. FREAKING. OCCASSIONS. this man is the epitome of annoying and he had proven himself to be a total asshole until the very end. like what kind of friend are you if you continually degrade your friend and tell her that she should just go back to being a scribe despite of doing her best to become fit for the role? he was totally ignoring the amount of time and effort violet put into training and the all the blood she shed just because he was being a protective friend? FUCKING HELL! the amount of hatred i feel for this boy is immeasurable. of all the characters that ended up dead, i honestly wish he was one of them... and i don't feel sorry for saying that. this rant could go on for ages, but i had to force myself to stop. /rolls eyes indefinitely
*:・゚✧ “i'm terrified you're not going to make it to graduation, vi...you know exactly how i feel about you, whether or not i can do anything about it, and i'm terrified.”

╭⋆ romance: ⋆╯
violet and xaden's slowburn romance was immaculate!! the banters?? the tension?? the constant pining between each other was chef's kiss! these two had be giggling and stomping my feet over how much i loved them together. i anticipated every scene and chapter that they were in together. no matter how much they fight the attraction they have for each other, it all boils down to the fact that they do WANT and NEED each other. i need more of this power couple and i can't wait for book 2!!! also, i didn't even consider—even for a short moment—dain to be romantically involve with violet or that it was a love-triangle to begin with. i just saw him as a nuisance lol
