there are no words to describe how much i loved reading this book. it’s a work of fiction, but feels so real. a true masterpiece touching on love, friendships, community, and a shared sense of hope.
there is beauty in feeling lost in life, because it can bring us to discover truths about our actual desires and can connect us with people who can shape a change in your perspective forever.
of the various characters in the universe of hyunam-dong, i resonate most strongly with minjun. he can never quite figure his life out but he grows to understand that that’s okay. he learns that life is a progress. but he didn’t get there on his own - it took him stepping out of his comfort zone and opening himself to fresh environments to develop his new mindset. he allowed himself to be vulnerable and found solace in a close-knit community where he felt like he belonged. in a world full of noise, the bookshop was his silence. but not an empty silence. a silence filled with love, warmth, and comfort.
some may consider this a slow read, but i would argue that that’s almost the point. you need to take your time with it. to read, re-read, reflect, re-read again. when you need a pick me up it’s there. when you need a reminder that life is valuable, it’s there. when you need motivation to invest in yourself and believe in your worth, it’s there.
i would recommend this to anyone, no matter what stage of life they are in. of course, literature is subjective and it may not be for everyone. but for me, it was everything, and i’d love if there was more.
