Children of Virtue and Vengeance by Tomi Adeyemi

5.0

“From the gods comes the gift of life,” I whisper the Yoruba. “To the gods, that gift must be returned.”

Children of Virtue and Vengeance is the second in the Legacy of Orïsha series. It has all the things I am looking for in a new series: written by a POC, written by a female, written about non-white characters in a non-white world. It has magic and tiny bit of romance and well as strong action scenes involving women. This series is definitely a breath of fresh air compare to my usual reading.

In the first book, we met strong female characters, young women, who fought injustice and persecution to bring magic back to their land. So magic has been back a few weeks. The king is dead. The prince is "dead". The magi have their powers back and wtf, some muggles got magic too?!?

This book focuses on the growth of Zélie and Amari both in maturity and spiritually. We have many scenes where their loyalty and friendship are tested. Much like real life, these women struggle with heartache and pain and figuring out who they really are as people. We had beautifully defined characters in the first book and in this one, anything is fair game. People who would always have your back, desert you. Some may even do horrible acts with the purpose of doing good. I can certainly see why others didn't like this one as much as the first, however, I enjoyed it more because of this. I felt more connected to Zélie than ever before. The author forces us to deal with loss, grief, guilt, lost love. There is so much happening in this book that I can't imagine how Tomi Adeyemi is going to follow this up.
