The Breakaways by Cathy G. Johnson

2.0

Great diversity and representation but unfortunately too many characters for such a short volume means that nobody gets the focus they deserve. Everyone's characterization is (apart from maybe Faith) surface level and can be summed up in a word or two.

The plotting is also slipshod.Things just happen because they happen and well yes, that's how real life is, fiction should have a narrative arc.

Faith's imagination interludes failed as a framing device. They didn't really illuminate anything until perhaps the very end when Faith's imaginary friend just straight out tells her the team needs to work together. Spoilers, they "work together" to say f this let's get some pizza. Which as a fellow indoor kid I totally get, but if soccer wasn't at all important to your plot couldn't you have tried a little harder to come up with a reason for all these characters to come together that was?
