The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

5.0

A very difficult book to rate, but it definitely deserves five stars. One of the rare books that I feel like I should have waited until I was a bit older to read it- I picked it up as something to read at school between lessons and it was quite heavy for that sort of reading. I may revisit it at some point.
But the prose was beautiful, I wish I could write like Jemisin! The worldbuilding was also really unique- I wouldn’t want to live in the Stillness but I did find myself marvelling at it, it’s surprisingly rare in fantasy to find a world that feels truly different from our own.
The different timelines were a little bit confusing at first but I soon got used to it, not something I’ve read before. The second person pov was also not something I’ve read before but I enjoyed that too!
The characters weren’t all particularly likeable, but they all did feel very human- flawed and trying to make sense of a broken world.
The diversity was also really nice, it felt like Jemisin really cared about representing all kinds of people and it didn’t feel like she was just aiming for kudos.
Overall, a unique, affecting and satisfying read.
