Hack/Slash Omnibus Vol. 1 by Tim Seeley
2.0
Unfortunately, I didn't finish this. Partly, the library copy I had was absolutely falling apart and such a pain to read, but I also found myself glazing over the story... it just didn't grab my attention well enough that I wanted to continue the story.
Premise: Cassie Hack, after going through a series of traumatic events involving her mother as a child and teen, becomes a serial killer for Slashers, zombie-like killers bent on destruction and revenge. She travels with her Frankenstein-like partner, Vlad, to hunt down Slashers and make everything a bloody mess. Each chapter goes into a different story, a different Slasher with a different reason why so-and-so became a Slasher.
Art: The art is actually pretty nice, but there are different artists for the stories, so expect a lot of different styles to be represented. Overall, Cassie is pretty typical goth-like girl, attractive and wears a lot of black, sometimes revealing clothes. Vlad is usually designed with a mask and the other characters vary from attractiveness to downright ugly. The colors are nice, neither strong or passive. I would expect more intensity in the slasher scenes, but I didn't quite feel that.
Characters: Cassie is a pretty stereotypical, moody girl. Aside from the few times where she expresses her naïvety, she gives a lot of attitude and speaks in a very straight-forward manner. She doesn't have time for your bullshit and she would like to kill the Slasher, and move on. Some will like this, some will get a bit bored by it. Vlad is pretty passive, he plays a supportive character, so you don't learn too much about him.
Stories: Some were interesting, some were kind of bland. Like I said earlier, I just couldn't get into it. I like to think myself as open-minded, especially in the comic world, but this one had to be set aside. Perhaps I'll try it again in the future.
