This book took me a while because it has a very slow start. I put it aside for almost a year after reading about a quarter but after I picked it up again the plot got going and I had a great time! This book introduces my favourite character in the series - Suhail - who is just the best!? Like he's just such a nice person?? He reminds me of a more cheerful version of Tharkay from the Temeraire series. This book also delves a bit into different cultures' ways of treating gender while still being fairly true to history which was just really nice to see. I really enjoy Brennan's way of discussing these topics in a way that is neither blatantly anachronistic nor hostile.

This book was once again a little light on dragons but it had plenty of action and intrigue anyway when Isabella inevitably becomes involved in local affairs.
