After having read this collection of stories by Lovecraft I cannot honestly say I am a fan of his soi-disant cosmicism. His writing to me seems second rate compared to earlier works by Gothic authors like Sheridan Le Fanu or Edgar Allan Poe. At the same time, reading his writing it really struck me how much of modern horror seems to take its cue from Lovecraft.

While I won't be counting Lovecraft among my favorite authors anytime soon, I did really enjoy some of his stories, particularly The Shadow Over Innsmouth and The Dunwich Horror, both of which seem to presage the modern movie obsession with the idea that the backwoods of America are home to terrifying cults/murderers/general oddities.
