Definitely not Kristin Hannah's best work. But it's an older book and she's obviously improved dramatically since. It actually ended up being better than I thought it would early on. It does have kind of a Hallmark movie feel - angry 30 year old woman leaves the city and goes back to her hometown to take care of her injured mother, and - what a coincidence! - her first love just happens to be back there at the same time, to take care of his sick brother. And neither of them ever married!
It's not all bad though. The characters are well-developed and the relationship between mother and daughter is well done. The relationship between the high school sweethearts isn't as well developed.
More like a beach read than her historical fiction books.
