The Rainmaker by John Grisham
2.0

Grisham was certainly one of the authors who made me an avid audiobook listener/reader, when I started listening to them during a job I had back in college about 16 years ago. I found myself transfixed by the twisty law dramatics within works like the Firm, the Summons, and the Broker.

Needless to say, this is one that I hadn't picked up before, and I'm glad that I didn't. This one has a real feeling of being written by a ghostwriter while Grisham was in a slump. While it had the traditions of a Grisham law thriller (takes place in the south, has a mix of characters that help the reader understand the makings of the setting, and has a protagonist who is usually in way over their heads), it all was a little too outlandish. A newly minted lawyer starts a firm with a case worth millions and makes no mis-teps? A judge is obviously biased and never challenged by a lawyer with much more experience?

One has to always suspend their disbeliefs when reading fiction -- especially thrillers, but this one really takes the reader out on a limb. It's the first Grisham book that I struggled to finish unfortunately. Looking forward to jumping into another one soon.
